THE HOUSE OF PAVEL STROGANOFF IN ST. PETERSBURG
The house of Pavel Stroganoff is located at Ulitsa Sergievskaya, 11. It was built in an aristocratic quarter of Petersburg near the famous Summer Garden by the architect Ippolito Monigetti in 1856-1858. The palace housed a fabulous collection of art noted for its treasures of Italian painting from the 14th-17th centuries, applied European arts from the 16th - 18th centuries and Chinese art.
At the close of the 1870s an addition of expanded living quarters harmed the proportions of the building. Around1930 the building was transferred to a Naval College and is not open for casual visitors. Within the building some of the interior decoration has survived, most notably the Main Staircase.
